Breathtaking sunrises and sunsets that emblazon the sky are one of the many reasons vacationers and residents alike are drawn to Western Fire Island. Cool salty breezes from the Atlantic Ocean and the private waterfront communities beckon folks to the beachy barrier island on the southern shore of Long Island. The slip offers a respite from the New York City noise and traffic – vehicles aren’t permitted, so people rely mainly on bikes and walking to get around. “It’s mostly wagons and bikes and golf carts, but residents can get permits to drive,” says resident and Realtor Lisa Campbell of Netter Beach Estates. She emphasizes that the absence of cars adds to the enclave’s secluded feel. “Fire Island is a quiet, remote and overall beautiful place,” Campbell says. The handful of small hamlets and towns along the island are studded with coastal cottages nestled amidst the windswept sand dunes and narrow streets. Median values for real estate hover around $1.3 million on the western side of the slip. Homes range in size and price from quaint single-story homes for $1 million to beachside bungalows with rambling contemporary layouts and private pools for $4.2 million.
