Fire Island Community Spotlight | Atlantique

Atlantique Fire Island

Located in what is considered the narrowest part of Fire Island, Atlantique is a quaint, tight-knit Fire Island community devoted to boating with a 150-slip marina and snack shack. Keep reading to learn more about this rustic, peaceful community.

History

Atlantique was founded in 1912 by Carlton Brewster and Dr. George King, and shortly thereafter, a strip of land to its west that was known as Sea Fire Beach was acquired by the town of Islip and deemed a public recreational facility.

There is a difference between Atlantique Beach and the Fire Island community of Atlantique. The beach is an 875 foot wide strip between the ocean and the bay, and nestled between the communities of Atlantique and Lonelyville. Atlantique Beach is now run by the town of Islip as a town park and is accessible to anyone by either private boat or ferry.

A Boating Enthusiast’s Sanctuary

Atlantique proper only consists of about 50 homes, including the Appalachian Mountain Club‘s Fire Island headquarters.

Atlantique’s 150-slip marina offers:

  • Electrical and freshwater hook-ups
  • Pump-out station
  • 24-hour restrooms
  • Hot showers
  • Children’s playground
  • Handball and basketball courts
  • BBQ areas
  • Lifeguard-protected bay and ocean beaches, as well as sand dune guided walkways.

The marina docking rates in Atlantique are reasonable for Islip Town residents, but higher for non-residents. Availability is at a first come first served basis at the digression of the dockmaster, and anchoring out on either side of the marina is permissible. The Atlantique Marina dockmaster’s office monitors VHF Channel 9 and is also available by telephone at 631-583-8610.

The snack shack in Atlantique serves as a restaurant, mini-mart, and all-around social gathering spot. Additional services are available via the western and eastern neighbors of Fair Harbor or Ocean Beach respectively, both of which are a short walk away via the ocean or the famous “Burma Road.”

Unparalleled Serenity

The community of Atlantique is secluded from its neighboring towns due to thick sandy paths that are extremely difficult to traverse by bike. The residents of Atlantique enjoy a serenity unlike anywhere else on Fire Island because of its limited accessibility.

Close Proximity to the Amenities of Ocean Beach

Fire Island’s largest and most popular town, Ocean Beach is just a short walk or water taxi ride away.

Otherwise, you can walk 20 minutes west to Fair Harbor, a small, but beautiful little town that much appreciated amenities.

Atlantique Access

Atlantique is accessible by ferry from Bay Shore or private boat.

By Ferry

Take the ferry from the Bay Shore ferry terminal at the end of Maple Avenue in Bay Shore.

Since the ferry service is somewhat limited, many people take the ferry to and from Dunewood, a small community just west of Atlantique.

By private boat

Atlantique is almost exactly 2.5 miles east of the Fire Island lighthouse. Docking is available on a first come first serve basis. There is anchorage on either side of the marina.
