The Complete Guide to Surfing on Fire Island

East coast surfing

Surfing is typically not the first thing that comes to mind when people think of Fire Island, but there are several factors that make Fire Island a perfect spot to enjoy some of the best surf conditions the East Coast has to offer. In this article, we’ll cover the different Fire Island surf spots, the best seasons to go surfing on Fire Island, as well as where to go to purchase surf gear.

Beach breaks for Miles

Fire Island surf is made possible courtesy of sandbars and jetties found along the 10-mile stretch of beach. Since these sandbars are constantly shifting, you have to be on your toes, and patient. This isn’s California.

Regardless, surf on Fire Island is relatively consistent, and its somewhat isolated location means less crowds!

Best Board for Fire Island Surf

It’s best to have or bring several different types of boards because Fire Island surf conditions are fickle and in constant flux.

When there is some size, a 6’2-6’4 shortboard will serve you well, and is really your only option. (Good luck paddling out with a longboard or fun-board)

When the waves are three 3 feet and under, a longboard, fun-board and/or fish are your best bet.

Seasons

Summer

Summer is not the best time to surf on Fire Island. The beaches are packed, and it’s oftentimes as flat as a lake. The water temperatures in the summer range from 50-70 degrees, so this would be a better time to wade around or go for a swim.

Fall

If you are an advanced surfer, this is the time to visit Fire Island. The water temperatures are still manageable and there are more frequent swells because of hurricane season (August-September)

Pristine, quintessential East Coast barrels are a welcomed by-product, but there will be some crowds.

Winter

Surfing in the winter on Fire Island is not for the faint of heart. The air temperatures are freezing, and the water temperatures are below 40 degrees…

However, if such conditions don’t phase you, you’ll enjoy sizeable waves and uncrowded lineups.

Be sure to bring your 5mm wetsuit, gloves, booties and a hood.

Spring

Springtime surf conditions in Fire Island is unpredictable, to say the least. You really just have to get lucky.

One day, it will feel like a late-summer day with swell, and the next day, winter weather will be back in full force, but completely flat.
